Jennifer McIntyre Askew, LMFTA
Clinical Therapist & Educator
Do you ever feel like you’re doing all the things, checking all the boxes, but something still feels off? Or how about this: you’ve tried and tried to make your relationship work, but nothing feels effective. Maybe you’re carrying anxiety that won’t quiet down, feeling stuck under the weight of depression, struggling to move forward after a painful experience, or simply feeling exhausted from trying to hold everything together. Sound familiar? You are not alone.
Hello there! My name is Jennifer McIntyre Askew, and this is your invitation to take a breath. If you’ve come this far–far enough to reach this webpage and my therapist bio–then perhaps you’re ready for the next step too.
As scary as it can feel to reach out to a new therapist and actually begin to figure out the why behind all the things you’re feeling, I can assure you that I make a good companion for the journey. I’m passionate about healing, about success, about becoming. Becoming who you desire to be, who you were born to be, who God created you to be.
Maybe you do great when it comes to getting things done and being successful at work, but when it comes to the rest of life, you feel lost. Maybe your marriage feels complicated. Maybe every time you try to communicate or express how you feel, somehow things end up worse than before. Or maybe the struggle is happening mostly inside of you. Anxiety keeps you on edge. Depression makes it hard to enjoy things you used to love. Past hurts continue to shape your present. You feel stuck, overwhelmed, or disconnected from yourself, others, and God.
It shouldn’t be this hard, right? I get it—when life feels harder than we think it should, it can feel like we’re doing everything wrong. And it’s not just marriages. Friendships, dating relationships, family dynamics across generations, work stress, major life transitions, and even your relationship with your spiritual community and God can feel strained and difficult. Every one of these areas matters, and when things start to unravel, it can be hard to see clearly or know what to do next. Sometimes, it’s even hard to know how to feel—other than lost, overwhelmed, or alone.
As a marriage and family therapist and a woman of faith, I firmly believe in attending to the whole person–mind, body and soul. Your story matters–the good, bad, the ugly, and everything in between. I also strongly believe in Ephesians 2:10—you are God’s workmanship! No matter what your story is, it has purpose. Whether you are looking for therapy for yourself or for you and a significant other, my goal is to offer a safe space where you can exhale, gather yourself, and find a way forward. As your therapist, you can expect me to provide empathy, a sense of belonging, and clarity along the way. You deserve to feel seen, understood, and valued.
With my bachelor’s from UNCG in Studio Art, training in Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) and my Master’s degree from Montreat College in Marriage and Family Therapy, No matter if you’re dating, engaged, or married, I’m ready to walk with you on your journey–offering insight, skills, and strategies for personal and relational growth as you take each step toward your goals. Using the Gottman method and EFT principles, I help couples in particular learn to effectively communicate and reconnect so each partner feels heard and can begin to rediscover hope that there is a way forward. Whether you are trying to heal after betrayal, grieving your empty nest, feeling stuck in the throes of childrearing, or anything in between, there is a place for you here.
I also utilize Narrative therapy and draw from other modalities such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Structural Family Therapy (SFT) and Internal Family Systems (IFS) based on your unique needs, or your family’s needs. Each of these modalities can be incorporated with the Christian faith, if you so desire and to whatever degree is most comfortable for you. Ultimately, I will collaborate with you in forging the most effective path through the wilderness of issues you are facing. No matter what you are struggling with or what challenges you face, you don’t have to face them alone. Finding the right counselor for the journey can make all the difference.
I’m ready when you are.
