Christian Therapy in North Carolina
Are you struggling with anxiety, but you’ve been told it’s because you don’t have enough faith? Do you find yourself navigating a heaviness that just doesn’t seem to be going away no matter what you try? Are you tired of getting the same parenting advice from people in your life over and over again but nothing ever seems to change and you wonder if maybe there is something else going on? Do you find yourself a few years into your marriage wondering how it could get this bad, and if there’s any hope for a redemptive relationship after all?
At Dwell, we encounter these scenarios all the time. Churches and Christians are usually well versed in caring for the spiritual and physical needs of their people. But when it comes to mental and emotional struggles, there appears to be a gap. Whether due to cultural stigma, misconceptions about clinical counseling, or an overall misunderstanding of psychological suffering, we have to know better to serve better.
As licensed Christian therapists serving the Triad and Triangle areas of North Carolina (and throughout NC via telehealth), we offer compassionate, professional counseling that integrates evidence-based practices with biblical principles. Together, we can navigate life's struggles and find lasting healing through God’s love, grace, and guidance.
Let’s work together to build emotional well-being while staying grounded in your faith. Whether you’re seeking support for yourself, your family, or your congregation, we are here to help. Reach out today and get started on your journey to peace.
Why is Dwell different for therapy?
At Dwell Christian Therapy & Training, we believe that healing is possible through God's power, whether it comes through immediate miracles or the process of therapy, medication, and hard work. We are a licensed, faith-based therapy practice in North Carolina, offering mental health support to individuals and families navigating a wide array of mental health struggles, including but not limited to anxiety, depression, trauma, and relational issues.
In a world filled with brokenness, we offer a holistic approach to mental health, integrating biblical truth with evidence-based therapeutic practices to foster healing and wholeness for the mind, body, and soul. Our foundation is built on these principles:
Our Approach to Healing
God Heals: We trust that God is at work in all healing, whether immediate or gradual. While we acknowledge that healing may not always come in the way we expect, we firmly believe that God is no less glorified in the use of therapy, medication, or perseverance than through immediate healing acts.
Healing in Mind, Body, Soul, Relationships: True healing goes beyond the body—it touches the heart, soul, and even relationships. We help individuals and families see more clearly the truth and beauty of the gospel and the purpose God has for their lives, even in the midst of pain and suffering.
Psychological Excellence: We believe that all truth is God’s truth, meaning that God is the Creator of all things and the author of all truth, wherever it is found. This includes much of psychology–which, when filtered through the Word of God, can be incredibly relevant and useful as we care for the minds, bodies, and souls of hurting people. We strive in all we do to be Biblically grounded and psychologically informed. We believe this places us in a very strategic position to minister to the unseen wounds and emotional suffering of the people we serve. Schedule an appointment today with one of our trauma-informed therapists.

Our Beliefs: Rooted in Biblical Truth
Our therapy philosophy is grounded in the belief that God’s design for people is intentional and beautiful, even in our brokenness. In a roots-up approach that assumes Biblical authority, accepts the reality of original sin, and affirms God’s intentional design, we zoom out to gain a clearer picture of the whole person, the environment, the history, and the spiritual journey. In this way, we can meet people where they are in the depths of their humanity. We can strive for healing and wholeness even in a broken world. We will rest in the hope of salvation and the goodness of God.
Why Choose Dwell?
We offer a unique approach that:
Integrates Faith and Therapy: We bring the truth of God’s word into our therapeutic work, always at the client’s discretion, encouraging spiritual growth alongside emotional healing.
Provides Compassionate Care: We walk with you through the challenges of life, offering a safe, confidential space to explore your struggles and find hope.
Addresses Holistic Healing: Our focus is on the whole person—mind, body, soul, and relationships—working toward lasting transformation.
Guarantees Clinical Excellence: We believe you shouldn’t have to choose between a Christian integration and clinical expertise. We firmly believe that it is possible, even imperative, to offer both in order to promote true and lasting healing. Here at Dwell, we do not compromise on Biblical truth, nor do we compromise on striving to be the best in our field and experts in our unique clinical specialties.

We provide Biblically-grounded therapy
When it comes to providing therapy from a Biblical worldview, we adhere to these basic principles:
We believe truth is built on a foundation of God’s Word and truth exists in psychological principles because God is sovereign over all of creation
Mental illness is a form of suffering that is a result of living in a broken world. It’s not something to be avoided or approached from a purely spiritual lens.
A person is never defined by a diagnosis. Diagnoses can be incredibly helpful in the therapeutic process, but it cannot describe who you are.
Suffering from a mental illness does not necessarily imply a lack of faith. Mental health is complex, just as human design is complex by design, and our approach to treatment and healing must be no less.
God is the ultimate Healer – and He can use whatever means He pleases to accomplish this.
We provide trauma-informed therapy
What is trauma? While there are quite a few definitions out there, here is a brief but accurate description that we have found to be helpful:
A unique experience to an individual in which a threat occurs to a his body, sanity, or life and he is unable to integrate this experience (make sense of it).
Understanding how trauma can affect our physical bodies, emotional health, relationships, and spiritual journeys helps us to foster whole person healing and restoration. When trauma is a part of one’s story, it shapes her worldview and it affects her understanding of abstract concepts like trust, truth, safety, and love. Trauma is a powerful force that forges a path, like rushing water that forms a river over time, becoming a natural part of its surroundings. It is not easy to divert a river or to change its course. And it is not easy to change the thoughts and beliefs resulting from years of abuse, or even a single moment of horror.
Our goal is to be informed through current research, to provide excellent care through evidence-based treatments, and to offer support and encouragement as we walk with our clients toward healing and wholeness.
We provide consistently excellent clinical care
At Dwell, we are committed to providing excellence in every aspect of our work. As licensed Christian mental health therapists, we firmly believe that you shouldn’t have to compromise on either your Christian worldview or clinical expertise. We strive to blend Biblical wisdom with psychological principles to offer effective, compassionate care that promotes healing and growth. Whether you’re seeking support for anxiety, depression, or helping your children navigate the challenges of mental illness, we approach each individual and family with intentionality, compassion, and purpose. We also love partnering with the local Church and community to offer proactive, prevention-focused strategies that are God-honoring while addressing real-life struggles. We aim to equip you with the tools, wisdom, and support you need to reach your goals.
In addition to their rigorous Master’s degrees, each clinician has completed certification in trauma therapy, continuing education in their area of expertise, supervision from other experts in the field, and hold an ongoing love of learning more about their areas of specialty. We hold the value of learning and growing as dearly in our clinicians as we do our clients.

How do I get started with therapy?
Starting therapy for the first time can be intimidating and navigating the process can feel confusing. We get it–and we’re here to help each step of the way.
First, we invite you to schedule either a free 20 minute consultation or a full 50-minute intake session:
During this initial conversation, we’ll discuss your concerns, answer any questions you may have, and determine how our services can best support you. If you decide to move forward, we’ll match you with a therapist who aligns with your specific needs and goals. Our team is committed to creating a welcoming, confidential, and nurturing environment where you can feel safe to explore your thoughts and emotions. Whether you’re struggling with anxiety, depression, or navigating family challenges, we are here to help you start your healing journey with compassion and purpose.
What is the purpose of therapy?
When considering where to go for therapy and which therapist is right for you, it’s important to start with the basics. What is therapy? And sometimes more importantly–what it is not. Therapy is not just a space for venting or a quick fix–as much as we’d like to guarantee a timeline, mental health is complex and our approach to it must be no less. Therapy at Dwell is also not an emergency service – we can’t provide that level of care, but your local emergency center can.
Instead, therapy at Dwell means a safe, confidential environment where you can explore your emotional wounds, heal from past trauma, and begin to understand the psychological suffering that may be affecting your daily life. It can be a place where you explore relationships that feel difficult in this season or spend time understanding the triggers that keep you stuck in frustrating patterns of behavior.
Therapy provides tools and insights to help you navigate life’s challenges, whether you’re struggling with anxiety, depression, relationships, parenting, or another mental illness. It can be a place to gain clarity, discover healthier ways of thinking, and heal emotionally, physically, and spiritually. While faith can be a powerful part of the process, therapy is not meant to replace spiritual guidance but to complement it by addressing the emotional and psychological aspects of your well-being.
Frequently Asked Questions about Therapy
How do I know if I need therapy?
If you’ve been through something difficult and you just don’t seem to be bouncing back like you expected, or if your symptoms seem to be worsening no matter what you try, or if you find yourself lashing out at loved ones more than ever, it may be time to seek out professional help. If you’re feeling overwhelmed, struggling with anxiety, depression, or relationship issues, or if you’re finding it hard to cope with daily life, therapy can help. Therapy can provide support, guidance, and tools to foster healing and restore purpose in your life. If you’re unsure, book a free 20 minute phone call – we’re always happy to answer questions and point you in a good direction, whether that’s therapy with someone on our team or somewhere else!
I tried therapy before and it didn’t work.
Sometimes, the right approach or therapist can make all the difference. Dwell offers quality, compassionate care and expertise in various mental health struggles. And for Christians, we also offer a faith-based perspective that integrates Biblical principles with therapeutic techniques. If past therapy didn’t work, it could be due to a mismatch in approach or fit. Maybe it’s time to give it another try—our compassionate, personalized approach could help you find the healing, growth, and peace you're looking for.
How many therapy sessions will I need?
Depending on your needs and goals, we can determine together how long would be most helpful and beneficial to you. We never want to rush the process, but also do not want you to be in therapy longer than needed. We always say that our goal is to put ourselves out of a job, however long that takes!
How do I pick the right therapist?
Choosing the right therapist is essential for your success in therapy. Look for a licensed professional who aligns with your values and is expertly trained in the specific area of help you are seeking. If you’re seeking Christian mental health services, find a therapist who also integrates Christian principles and Biblical wisdom with proven therapeutic techniques (it’s not a trade off!). Be sure to schedule a consultation to see if you feel comfortable and understood by the therapist before committing. Book a free consult with someone on our team now.
What is a modality and why is it important?
It’s a fancy term for how we do therapy. We offer a variety of therapy modalities tailored to your unique needs and challenges, and each clinician has his or her own preferred methods depending on their specialty and the training they’ve received. Our overall approach here at Dwell blends evidence-based practices with spiritual integration to provide holistic care. We use Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) to help identify and change negative thought patterns, Emotion-Focused Therapy (EFT) to deepen emotional awareness and connection, and Trauma-Informed Therapy to support healing from past wounds. Additionally, we offer EMDR for trauma recovery, Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) for emotional regulation (and more), Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) for OCD, and Person-Centered and Narrative Therapy to foster personal growth and healing through storytelling. Christian therapy combines traditional therapy methods with Biblical truth, helping you navigate life’s struggles through both theological and psychological tools. Each modality is carefully chosen based on your needs and goals to guide you toward healing and wholeness.
How will I know when therapy is working?
Sometimes, therapy feels heavy and almost like it is making things worse. However, you'll start to notice positive changes in how you handle stress, anxiety, or emotional challenges. With Christian therapy, healing often includes a growing sense of peace, spiritual growth, and improved relationships. Mental, physical, and spiritual maturity go hand in hand! You’ll feel more empowered, equipped to manage difficulties, and experience a deeper connection to God and others. Regular progress checks with your therapist will also help ensure you’re on the right path. Finally, remember that healing is not linear and that you’ll never be “done” with the work–although there is so much healing that is possible this side of heaven and it is our job to help you get there. What matters is not that you are never triggered by the past or that your therapist “signs off” on your total and complete healing, but rather that you begin to love the work of growing and healing and changing. It’s a lifelong process, but it does get easier–and therapy is an amazing way to learn how to do it with lots of grit and grace.
What if I feel worse after my sessions?
It is normal to make initial progress, and even to feel better after your first session or two of therapy. Therapy often feels good because you are sharing your burdens and starting to make sense of your distress. Sometimes it just feels good to share your story with an unbiased individual with no fear of judgment and no pressure to say the “right” things. But because people are complex and relationships are dynamic, it is inevitable that you will experience obstacles to progress, roadblocks to the personal growth you so want to achieve. When you get stuck in the “weeds” of past trauma, painful memories, and personal difficulties, it’s easy to get discouraged. However it is normal to experience the concept of “3 steps forward, 2 steps back” during the process of therapy.
It is also normal to feel tired and heavy after your therapy sessions. This means you are deeply engaging in the therapy process. Think of it like working out–sometimes you feel incredibly sore and it hurts for days. Sometimes you feel like a rockstar and on top of the world. Progress is sometimes quick and sometimes painstakingly slow, but we truly believe that your journey is unique and that your hard work is not in vain.
How much will this cost me?
The cost of a 50-minute therapy session at Dwell is $140-$175, depending on the clinician. Dwell is in network with Aetna and BCBS, but out of network with all other insurances. We would be happy to provide you with an itemized receipt so that you can submit to your insurance company directly and receive reimbursement (please contact your insurance company directly to determine the out-of-network reimbursement rates for your plan). We also offer a 20 minute phone consultation–free of charge–to make sure we are a good fit for you.
